Life: A criss-cross of discourses

Wing// Random Thoughts

Hi there, it’s Wing.

First posts are always hard. I’ve been looking at this page for nearly half an hour trying to decide what to write. Just like writing the first sentence to the Introduction section of a paper, the possibilities are endless. However, in almost any case, one would want the impact to be quite high.

I guess I will start by talking about why this blog was started. For me, I wanted to improve my writing by discussing about things that interested me. Mostly, I wanted to talk about my research interests, my faith, and also my hobbies in an informal manner.

Through this process, I also want to take this blog as an opportunity to get to know my partner a little bit more. Writing is so powerful and it is a practice which reveals so much. In critical social theory, Michel Foucault talks about discourses. Discourses are conceptual frameworks and meanings which underlie what we write and express.

Although my partner and I experience very similar moments throughout the day, we might express it differently through different discourses. These discourses are formed by our internal values and external influences.

One thing that has struck me is the fact that my partner and I often have very different rationales for our shared values. Unlike me, my partner is a quantitative and logical thinker. He is non-religious and he is extremely witty and funny.

I think his writing will show me why he writes stuff and why he thinks it’s important. In this way, I hope to get to know him just a little bit more.
